Law Clerk

Arthur Golden, author of the bestselling novel, Memoirs of a Geisha wrote: “Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that we see ourselves as we really are.” While it is a very apt motto for long-suffering Toronto Maple Leaf fans, it is also a fitting depiction of Melissa.

As a child, and when she was 13 years old, Melissa suffered from a facial paralysis called, Bell’s Palsy (think of Jean Chretien). Fortunately it was just a temporary affliction, although having to cope with it during her formative years could not have been easy.

Despite her condition, Melissa would let nothing get in the way of her living her life, sometimes even relying on a little help from her friends. In grade 7, for example, she was selected by her high school to participate in a trip to Florida to meet Chris Hadfield and watch a rare Space Shuttle launch!

In her youth, Melissa also volunteered with the Saint John’s Ambulance Brigade, providing medical treatment at various events throughout the National Capital Region, including the Ottawa Exhibition.

When it came time for higher education, Melissa decided to attend Carleton University in Ottawa where she completed a four year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Law before enrolling in the Law Clerk Diploma Program at Algonquin College.

A lover of travel and the great outdoors, Melissa stays active by biking, going for walks, camping in Algonquin Park and satisfying her need for speed by watching Moto GP motorcycle racing. Having been thoroughly charmed by a recent trip to Costa Rica, she can hardly wait to make a return engagement.

Although she enjoys all types of music including classical and opera, perhaps her next holiday will take her to Iceland to see one of her favourite rock bands, Sigur Rós, live! Or maybe she’ll plan a trip down to Hollywood, California so that she can try to stalk…er…meet Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Melissa is outgoing, energetic and most certainly a “glass half full” type. Clients particularly value the patience she exhibits when discussing their matter. Indeed, Melissa prides herself on providing continuous updates so that clients can be sure that we are doing our best to keep things moving along and resolving things as quickly as possible.
