Holidays can be difficult when you’re single, and Valentine’s Day may be one of the worst ones. Your coworkers are receiving flowers, your friends are making couples-only plans, and the stores are filled with heart-shaped boxes of chocolate. While you might be completely fine with flying solo most of the year, it can suddenly become a difficult and lonely proposition. But don’t let the traditional ideas of Valentine’s Day get you down! Why not be your own Valentine?
Treat Yourself. Just because you don’t have anyone to buy gifts or cards for (or receive them from) doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a little something. Splurge on a new outfit, a DVD boxed set, or anything else that you might have your eye on.
Recruit Other Singles. It’s quite likely that you aren’t the only one who doesn’t have plans with a partner. Invite the other singles you know out to a restaurant or have them over to your place for a party. Encourage them to bring their other single friends to help mix things up a little. Who knows? You just might end up meeting someone new!
Enjoy the Me Time. Sometimes there’s nothing better than lying on the sofa, watching your favourite movies, and just relaxing. Relish the fact that there’s nobody around to tell you that you can’t stay in your pajamas all day or that your favourite movie is way too cheesy. You could also indulge in a hobby that you never seem to have time for. It’s your day, so do what makes you happy.
Try Something New. It can be hard to find the time for new interests, but why not now? Try cooking a new dish, making a new craft, or exploring that historical site you always drive past. It’s a great chance to learn a little bit more about yourself and what you’re capable of.
Spend Time with Your Family. Remember that you are loved by the people who matter the most in the world: your family! Get together for a big dinner or splurge on gifts for your nieces and nephews.
You don’t have to love someone else to enjoy Valentine’s Day; just show yourself some love instead! Turn Singles Awareness Day into Singles are Awesome Day. Remember that spending Valentine’s Day alone is a lot better than spending it with the wrong person!
