Gelman & Associates is thrilled to welcome Jennifer Shuber to our firm. Jennifer is a highly-regarded family lawyer and has been practicing exclusively in the area of family law for the past two decades. Jennifer left a very successful practice to join the Gelman & Associates team and will be based in Toronto. Jennifer is a Certified Specialist in Family Law, a designation only 64 other lawyers in Ontario hold.
What is a Certified Specialist?
The Certified Specialist designation is granted to a small number of practicing lawyers by the Law Society of Ontario (LSO), distinguishing those who are approved as leaders in their respective practice areas.
Qualifications for Certification
Lawyers must practice for a minimum of seven years before becoming eligible to apply for Certified Specialist status. During that time, they must devote a concentration of their practice to their area of specialty and demonstrate a mastery of substantive law, practices, and procedures.
The learning criteria and standards for certification are grouped by Areas of Specialization. With respect to family law, applicants must comply with a number of stringent requirements just to be considered eligible for the designation, including:
- Applicants must have had carriage of at least 15 complex cases of substance, at least some of which were resolved after a court proceeding was commenced or through arbitration;
- Applicants must have advised clients with respect to over 100 specific issues across five categories, as specified by the LSO;
- Applicants must have experience with over 10 different types of alternative dispute resolution methods specified by the LSO; and
- They must provide the LSO with case analyses for 10 cases which demonstrate their broad and varied experience and a mastery of substantive law and procedures in family law.

Jennifer is widely-regarded as an expert in family law, and her designation as a Certified Specialist is well deserved. She has spent her career advising clients on all matters relating to marriage and divorce, including domestic contracts, division of property, custody, and child & spousal support. She has also focused on high conflict, complex custody and access matters as well as those relating to parties with a high net worth.
In addition to appearing before all levels of court in Ontario, Jennifer is highly skilled in mediation and arbitration and is recognized as an Accredited Family Mediator by the Family Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario.
Jennifer has authored and co-authored a number of papers and articles on family law issues, particularly on topics such as mediation/arbitration, and custody & access. She also regularly speaks on various family law topics as she continues her own education and assists other lawyers in the field.
