Karen Kotansky
Senior Lawyer (Not Practicing)
Karen is one of those people who is so organized that you might wonder if she has a secret twin getting things done while she sleeps. At Gelman & Associates, Karen is responsible for all the day to day operations of the firm. Before she joined Gelman & Associates, she worked at LawPRO, which is the Law Society of Ontario’s professional liability company. While there, she acted as Secretary of the Board, answering legal questions about the insurance program, and she helped launch the Customer Service Department. Eventually, she became manager of the department, recruiting and training all of the staff members and overseeing the operations of the entire department which handled more than 100,000 calls and queries every year. Sounds exhausting, doesn’t it?
But nothing stops Karen. At the same time that she held her demanding job at LawPRO, she worked with the Treasurer and Benchers of the Law Society to help make confidential decisions about the future of Ontario Lawyers. She even helped draft the current Professional Liability policy that the 25,000+ lawyers in Ontario must adhere to.
While Karen believes she isn’t a very interesting person, we beg to differ. Besides staying dedicated to her clients at Gelman, she is raising three children and is the General Manager of her son’s hockey team. What better person for this job, which involves keeping both the kids and parents happy while organizing the games, ice rinks, and tournaments? (We’re convinced that Karen must have studied juggling at some point.) Besides those obligations, Karen is vice-president of the Hatikvah Chapter of Hadassh-WIZO, an organization that raises funds for women and children in need.
Karen graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1992 and called to the Bar of Ontario in 1994. Prior to that, she majored in psychology. Although, she does not practice law at the firm, she has a keen understanding of the dynamics of these cases, and the clients, which assist her in handling all the intense situations at the firm. Karen’s vast knowledge of the law and experience in her field has made her a “get the job done” kind of lawyer. Gelman and Associates is happy to reap the benefits of Karen’s vast organizational skills and legal talents.
