Kat Kumka
Lawyer
Kat graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from SFU. She then did a Bachelors of Social Work through Dalhousie and graduated with distinction. In addition, she completed the joint JD and MSW program through Windsor.
After graduating from law school Kat completed joint articles with two boutique law firms in downtown Toronto.
Kat has experience working in a variety of mental health and health care settings. She spent five years at a mental health treatment facility for adolescents with complex mental health needs. During this time, she worked with youth amd their families in the community treatment program, as well as in the inpatient treatment programs.
She has worked with court involved youth providing individual counseling and writing reports to the Court to inform bail and sentencing decisions, and dangerous offender hearings.
Kat developed a keen interest in personality disorders, particularly Borderline Personality Disorder. She received training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which is the therapy modality developed specifically for treating BPD.
She has also provided individual therapy to youth and adults ranging in ages 10 to late 60s.
While in law school, Kat volunteered with Windsor’s Community Legal Aid program. While at CLA, she appeared in front of the Landlord and Tenant board, as well as at the Ontario Court of Justice for minor traffic offenses and criminal offenses.
Kat has been a semi-professional musician! It counts if you get paid to play right? She plays both violin and alto saxophone.
During her free time she tries to find her way to a live music events, plays her own musical instruments, and practices her photography skills.
